Hasami (Scissors)
Japanese, Digital, 22:29 min, 2024experimental hybrid-documentary film


Following her younger sister's passing, Eiko embarks on a journey to honor her final wishes, seeking a resting place for her ashes outside their family's burial plot in Hasami.
&#38;nbsp;

Hasami (Scissors) unfolds through a rich tapestry of dreamlike reenactments and intimate interviews, capturing a daughter’s quest to understand their mother and support her journey toward healing from an abusive past.
Shot on location in Hasami, Nagasaki Prefecture, Japan, I presented this experimental documentary short film as a culmination of my graduate MFA thesis work in Social Documentation at UCSC. The doc explores heavy topics like domestic abuse and the transfer of intergenerational trauma that is tended to emotionally, visually, and sonically with great care.

The Vanishing Japantown

Digital, 6:27 min, 2021short documentary film

 The last Japanese-owned business in the former historic Japan town of Watsonville, CA, Yamashita Market, shut their doors in April 2021. With the closure of this market, the greater Santa Cruz/Watsonville area lost a staple in the local Japanese-American community. This short documentary follows the ways in which other Asian communities in the area filled the void and, ultimately, how food is a monument to cultural diaspora.

This project was aimed to be an exploration of the glaring lack of Asian and global food markets in the Santa Cruz, California area where I attended graduate school. Locals usually drive an hour up the mountains to get to Asian grocery stores in the San Jose area for produce and tofu. The nearest homemade tofu was sold at Gombei Bento &#38;amp; Tofu at Sunnyvale, CA. where HBJ Oriental Store and Food to Go travels to every week for the Asian-American community in Watsonville.

UMEBOSHI:


Toyoko Matsuo is an experimental documentary filmmaker based in Japan.
Born in the quiet hot spring town of Ureshino, Japan, &#38;amp; raised across the shifting landscapes of the U.S., their films emerge from the liminal spaces between languages, homelands, and inherited memories. 
Toyoko holds a dual Bachelor of Arts in Gender &#38;amp; Women’s Studies and Film &#38;amp; Television from The University of Arizona and a Master of Fine Arts in Social Documentation from the University of California, Santa Cruz.

松尾都代子（マツオトヨコ）は日本を拠点に活動する実験的ドキュメンタリーフィルムメーカー。

九州の静かな温泉町・佐賀県の嬉野で生まれ、アメリカ各地を転々としながら育った彼らの作品は、言語、故郷、受け継がれた記憶のはざまに存在する曖昧な空間から生まれる。

アリゾナ大学でジェンダー・女性学および映画・テレビ学の学士号（ダブルメジャー）を取得し、カリフォルニア大学サンタクルーズ校でソーシャル・ドキュメンテーション（社会ドキュメンタリー）の美術学修士号（MFA）を取得しました。
